One Month

My darling Z -

Well kiddo, welcome to being Baby #2. Your one month post is almost a whole month late. I'm sorry. I haven't been writing here much, but I so love looking back at your sister's posts and I really want to have these for you too. I wish that I'd kept up with monthly posts after your sister turned 1, but c'est la vie, it is what it is.

First off my baby girl, I just want to thank you. You are an amazing baby. I thought your older sister was a great baby and she was, but your dad and I also didn't know what we were doing. With you though, both of us feel so much more comfortable about what we're doing and I think that's helped bring your calmer nature to the forefront. You have been an amazing sleeper (which I know I will jinx myself by saying, but you are! And I am so grateful!). The first couple of nights at home were a little on the rougher side, but then we discovered you like binkys! Thank god! A baby who can be soothed without the boob! And then who sleeps! Thank you universe!

I've loved getting to snuggle with you baby girl. Newborn snuggles are absolutely the best and I am absolutely doing my best to cherish this time with you. I've said it sarcastically plenty of times (#cherisheverymoment), but right now I really am trying to because I know how very quickly this time with you is going to go. I'm going back to work when you're 10 weeks old which will be hard, but I learned with your older sister that I am a much better mother when I'm working outside the home. I do feel badly that I won't have as much time at home just you and me that I did with A, but I know you'll do great at Cindy's, especially with A watching over you! (And watch over you she does! Whenever we go pick her up she doesn't want any of the other kiddos to touch you or play with you.)

Nursing is also going well now - it was painful again at the beginning (especially on the left side!), but after a few weeks we got back in the groove. I've been pumping once a day to try to get a few ounces in the freezer and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to pump enough once I go back to work so that we can keep you on breast milk for at least a year. We'll see how it all goes though.

My recovery has been so much easier this time around too, which was enormously helpful. I felt like I got hit by a truck with your big sister, and my whole world had been turned upside down. My world definitely got rocked a bit with your entry but we've been finding our groove. It's definitely been a learning curve as we get to know you with your big sister also needing our attention, but we're figuring it out. As I said though, it helps a lot that she loves you so much. I can't even imagine how much harder it would be if she wasn't so happy to have you here.

And of course your grandparents absolutely dote on you. Grandparents are the best kiddo, as you will very soon see!

Z, you are just such an amazing baby. We all love you so much and are so glad that you're here. Life seems complete now that you're here. Crazy for sure, but complete. I love you so much baby girl.

So! Update for the couple of people who might still be reading this blog. I'm not really sure how often I'll keep writing (clearly...), but now that Z is here and two months old (almost), I've missed writing her a monthly update. So I do at least want to do that. What else I'll write... well, we'll see.

But first - look who's here!

Z arrived at the end of March, nearly a week after her due date. I was under the impression that second babies came sooner than first and came faster! Not the case with this little one, but just one more example that she's her own baby and I should stop comparing her to her sister already!

So far A has done great with her little sister - Baby Sister Z as she calls her (pretty much all the time - I'm pretty sure that Z will be Baby Z until she goes to high school!). But she loves seeing Z and knowing what she's doing. We kept A in daycare right now (since we'd have to pay for it anyway or lose her spot), and I think that was exactly the right move for us. A gets to run around and be loud and have her daily routine that she's used to and I've gotten a chance to cuddle and snuggle with Z all day long.

Also, I apparently make really similar babies - A and Z were almost identical weights and identical heights. I thought I had a better profile shot of A, but I do like this comparison of the two of them at 1 day old. A on the left and Z on the right.

Who doesn't like a series of newborn faces? I love this kiddo so much! Still hard to believe that I've got two wonderful kiddos, but I couldn't ask for anything more. Love you so much Z and I'm so glad you're here and I get to be your mama!

Due Date

Wow - I kind of can't believe it's here.

40 weeks. Our second kiddo is due today. Clearly, as you can see, I am still pregnant.

Come out, come out baby girl! We want to play with you!

And it doesn't appear that this kid has any intention of coming out any time soon. I had an appointment this morning and let's just say nothing is happening so far.

So in the meantime we wait. Things are wrapped up at work, my replacement is in place, but I'm still planning to work from home next week until kiddo comes (due to when I started full time at my job I have a limited amount of unpaid leave and as long as I can I'd rather help time move faster by distracting myself with work than have nothing to do and will this kid to come out!).

But it's still been a much different experience this time around than when A was born - I was laid off a few weeks before she was born and so was doing the sitting around, trying to figure out when she was going to come! This time I've told this kiddo again and again that she needed to wait until at least my due date. So, hey, she's listening to me! For likely the first and only time, eh?

A's been taking this all in stride. She's really been great. I don't know how much she really understands about what's going to happen no matter how much we talk about how her baby sister is going to come live with us soon, but hopefully the transition will go ok... It's going to happen soon no matter what we do, eh?

So hard to believe that I'm soon going to be a mama to two girls! I'm so excited to meet Baby Dos (as she's been christened) and start this next chapter (though I'll be honest, I'm not so excited about the lack of sleep... though it's not like I've been sleeping well for the last couple of months...).
